There are four main reasons a book is banned from a school system or library. They are banned based off of Social Grounds, Political Grounds, Sexual Grounds, and Religious Grounds. Parents who feel it needed for a book to be banned are generally are motivated to protect their children and keep them "pure".
Social GroundsBooks that are banned on social grounds are primarily based off of the foul language and racial segregation or offense in a novel. Examples: To Kill a Mocking Bird, By Harper Lee The Catcher in the Rye, By J.D. Salinger |
Political GroundsFor most people politics is a very touchy subject. If something is subjugated towards the opposite party in a positive way, or the party that the adult allies himself or herself with in a negative way. That book can be banned.
Examples: Animal Farm, By George Orwell |
Sexual GroundsMost books that are banned are banned because adults do not consent to young-adults reading items with a little sexual activity.
Examples: The Great Gatsby, By F. Scott Fitzgerald Catcher in the Rye, By J.D. Salinger |
Religious GroundsAs many people know there is great controversy between many religions all around the world. The Christians and Muslims are a prime example.
