What is Being Done About Banning Books:
“Unlike many adult readers, the majority of young readers don’t buy books. They are given books as gifts, they have books forced on them in the classroom, or they borrow books from a library.” One of the main theories for what should be done about banning books is putting a rating system on the jacket of the book, similar to a movie.
Sarah Coyne, a professor in Brigham Young University's department of family life, thinks a ratings system on book jackets would help parents decide what's appropriate for their kids to read. |
The 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated argued that an adult NC-17 rating essentially kills a movie's chance of being profitable, and countless filmmakers have had to edit their movies in order to score a lower rating—something that could happen to books if a similar rating process is implemented.
